Goals from Shaun Maloney and Callum McManaman in either half sealed the Latics path to next month’s final, in what turned out to be an intriguing contest between the two sides.
Man of the Match Maloney opened the scoring for Roberto Martinez’s side after 25 minutes, as the 30-year-old volleyed home a pinpoint cross from Arouna Kone, with the striker having beaten three Millwall defenders for pace on the right-hand side.
Wigan could have extended their lead as the half drew to a close, but a fine save from Millwall’s David Forde kept out Jordi Gomez’s effort.
And it was Wigan who put the game to bed, when Callum McManaman gave another fine display of his future prospects, as he collected Gomez’s pass, skipped around Forde and passed the ball into the empty net.
However, the tie was marred with the lowest semi-final attendance at the ‘new’ Wembley, with just 62,335 supporters turning out, as well as scenes of crowd trouble in the Millwall end.
The second semi-final, between Chelsea and Manchester City, takes place tomorrow afternoon at 4pm.
